The ability to extract knowledge from bits and bytes is a central component of most knowledge management environments. The importance of data architectures and tools such as data warehousing, data mining and business intelligence (BI) systems is very high since they can quickly inform us about what has happened and, through predictive modeling, start to provide insights into what may happen and help us in our decision-making processes. Furthermore, the importance of disseminating knowledge to other members of a community of practice is critical in connecting the dots. This is particularly important in law enforcement since crime prevention is the clear goal. In this session, two police departments present their KM initiatives as case studies for other public sector KM practitioners to explore.
