One of the most significant challenges presented by social media and other utensils in the Web 2.0 toolkit is the tension they create between knowledge workers and the information security establishment. Networking, whether social or professional, tends to prefer a freer, less constrained type of interaction that often mimics real life. The desire to post, download, tag and exchange multimedia objects and to engage in a stream of continuous and instantaneous interactions taxes infrastructure and creates security vulnerabilities. No one is more of aware of this problem than the military and intelligence communities that want to avail themselves of these tools for collaboration and transparency while maintaining the integrity of their environments. This session provides several case studies from federal agencies that have addressed the need for sharing knowledge in an environment which deals with sensitive and controlled information.
