Jeff Porter

Jeff Porter Director, Platform Technology Division Department of Information Technology Fairfax County, Virginia Jeff Porter has spent over 29 years in the IT industry working in different roles, ranging from a technician to a director, in both public and private sectors. He spent the first 13 years of his technology career working for the Air Force, spending most of that time in Europe in support of the European theatre. Jeff spent five years in Government Service working in Heidelberg, Germany, providing support for over 200 IT facilities, and direct IT support for our troops in Bosnia. He spent 3 years as a IT consultant working as the Integration and Implementation manager for a major cable and internet provider. Currently, he manages the Infrastructure Platform Division for Fairfax County Government. He is responsible for the overall management of the IT Service Desk, Desktop Support, Server Support (UNIX and Microsoft Windows Servers), Database Support (SQL and Oracle), Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SCCM, AntiVirus Support, Storage and Remote Access. Jeff attended the University of Maryland while in the Air Force in Europe, majoring in Information Systems.

Jerry Rutkowski

Jerry Rutkowski has more than 15 years of experience in the IT industry and is a former Air Force Captain, having worked within the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) as a Program Manager of satellite survivability technologies. Prior to joining 1E to manage its Federal business, he worked for Cisco Systems and Symantec. Jerry has deep domain expertise in numerous areas of IT, including PC power management, server efficiency, 'Green IT', semiconductors, optical networking, security and storage. He is experienced with most aspects of the Federal Government and DoD logistics and processes, including mission critical IT initiatives and recent Federal mandates which focus on energy efficiency and data center consolidation.

John T Thompson, PhD

Associate Professor, Educational Technology Program

Buffalo State College

Dr. Thompson is an Associate Professor at Buffalo State College in Buffalo, NY, USA, in the Educational Technology graduate program where he teaches almost all his courses as 100% online courses. He has over 40 years of experience in all levels of education, including over 25 years’ experience with technology. His previous career experience includes working in urban, suburban, and rural K-12 schools as an elementary and secondary classroom teacher, curriculum coordinator, principal, and school superintendent. He also functioned as director of training for two state governments and director of a computer training organization. His PhD is in Education Administration from the University at Buffalo. His primary research interests include green computing, desktop Web conferencing, and online learning. Dr. Thompson has many publications and has made numerous presentations at state, national, and international conferences.

Using less power isn’t just good for the environment; it’s good for the bottom line. EPA and DOE have established a number of guidelines and programs to guide IT professionals, including EPEAT, Energy Star, FEMP-designated energy efficient products. But wading through the sea of programs and certifications can be a challenge. Attendees in this session will learn:

  • best practices and simple strategies for power management
  • how consolidating and streamlining processes and improving overall operational efficiency can help with power management
  • the role of power management in an overall green IT strategy
